The Life Enrichment Program (LEP) in Burtonsville, MD is available to adults and transitional-aged youth (18 years of age and older) with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This program serves Montgomery, Howard and Prince George's County. The LEP accommodates the changing interests, abilities, needs and goals of each person we support by offering various activities in 3 different "Life Areas."
Creative Expression: This life area revolves around arts and crafts activities. Each day participants have the opportunity to exercise their creative side through projects using items of various size, color and texture. They choose and use paint, paper, fabric, beads, clay, yarn, etc. to create unique items for themselves or to give to others. Activities are designed to promote the use of fine and gross motor skills.
Sensory Development: The primary focus of this life area is to explore the five senses. Daily activities designed to incorporate the use of smell, touch, sight, hearing and taste are offered. The environment is calming, soothing and relaxing. Individualized attention is provided to participants so they can fully appreciate and become physically involved in stimulating activities. The sensory area also supports those who require more frequent personal care and medical attention.
Vocational Exploration: Life and employment skills are the focus within this life area. Lessons and projects are planned to assist participants become more independent in everyday life and develop employment skills through education based learning and practical application. Opportunities to apply the learned skill sets in real life situations are provided through weekly participation in planned events within the local community.
